Juicy, spiced, and naturally sweet – this plum compote recipe turns simple fruit into pure comfort food. With vanilla, cinnamon, and a pinch of cardamom, ripe plums become a fragrant fruit compote you can enjoy warm or cold — as a side, a dessert, or a topping for your favorite breakfast.

Some fruits are easy to love — strawberries, for example. Plums? Well, plums and I never really had a thing going. As a kid, I always left them untouched on the fruit plate. Even later, I’d usually walk right past them at the supermarket.

But somehow, plums keep surprising me. In a classic plum streusel cake? Absolutely dreamy. In my savory BBQ sauce? Weirdly genius. And when a few very ripe plums recently landed in my kitchen, I thought: “Why not?” Ten minutes later, I was stirring up a quick, healthy plum compote with cinnamon and cardamom — completely sugar-free.

The result? Autumn in a jar. And yes, I think plums might finally deserve a spot in my personal fruit hall of fame.

Ingredient Notes

You’ll only need 6 simple ingredients (and four of them are spices!):

  • Plums – ripe and juicy for the best flavor (purple or yellow)
  • Vanilla – rounds out the sweetness
  • Cinnamon – adds warmth, perfect for fall
  • Cardamom – a delicate, slightly exotic note
  • Orange juice – fresh or store-bought (or just use water)
  • Salt – a tiny pinch makes the flavors pop

Want it a bit sweeter? Add a tablespoon of maple syrup or your favorite sweetener.

See recipe card for quantities.

Top Tipp!

Use ripe, juicy plums. They add natural sweetness and depth of flavor. Under-ripe plums will leave your compote tasting tart and a bit flat. You’ll know plums are ripe when they give slightly under gentle pressure.
