Juicy, spiced, and naturally sweet – this plum compote recipe turns simple fruit into pure comfort food. With vanilla, cinnamon, and a pinch of cardamom, ripe plums become a fragrant fruit compote you can enjoy warm or cold — as a side, a dessert, or a topping for your favorite breakfast.

Ingredients

  • 450 g (1 lb) plums
  • 60 ml (¼ cup) orange juice or water (or grape juice)
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 - 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground cardamom
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional: 1 tbsp maple syrup

Instructions

  1. Pit and chop the plums.
  2. Add plums, juice/water, and spices to a pot. Bring to a boil.
  3. Simmer gently for 8–12 minutes*, until soft. Adjust spices to taste.
  4. Serve warm or cold.
  5. Keep in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Notes

* The cooking time depends on how ripe the plums are and your personal preference. If you prefer a purée, cook the fruit a little longer. If you cook it for a shorter time, the compote will remain more chunky.
