These creamy vegan mashed potatoes with vegan gravy make a perfect, healthy side dish - and they are completely oil-free!
I never thought you could make fluffy, creamy and "buttery" vegan mashed potatoes without the use of margarine, oil or even cream. But here we are. I recently stumbled across the secret to recreating the fluffy, rich texture that we all know and love of mashed potatoes: Coconut milk. Yes, coconut milk!
Don't worry, the potatoes will not taste like coconut (that doesn't sound very appealing now that I think about it). You add just enough to get the potatoes nicely mashed and creamy.
Apart from potatoes and coconut milk you need only 2 more ingredients - that's all it takes. And those two are salt and nutmeg - if you like, you can also add black pepper.
Gravy For My Mashed Potatoes
What goes well with mashed potatoes? Gravy, of course. What goes well with vegan mashed potatoes? You guessed it, vegan gravy. And this vegan gravy recipe is a super simple one that also requires just a few ingredients and is quickly made to pour on those warm mashed taters.
The gravy is also oil-free and pretty low in fat, plus it's gluten-free if you care about that. It's made with chickpea flour, nutritional yeast, tamari or soy sauce, water and a couple of spices and herbs. Not bad, right?
Of course there is no harm in eating the mashed potatoes without the gravy. You could eat them on the side of a veggie burger or a chickpea loaf together with my super delicious roasted cabbage steaks that I recently posted.
I hope you’ll give these easy creamy vegan mashed potatoes with gravy a try. If you do, let me know in the comments below. And don’t forget to rate the recipe. You can also tag a photo (#veggiejam) to show me your creation on instagram.

These creamy vegan mashed potatoes with vegan gravy make a perfect, healthy side dish - and they are completely oil-free!
Ingredients
Vegan Mashed Potatoes
- 2 lb potatoes
- ¾ cup full-fat coconut milk
- ½ tsp salt
- nutmeg and black pepper to taste
Simple Vegan Gravy
- ¼ cup chickpea flour* (25 g)
- 2 heaping tablespoon nutritional yeast
- 1 tsp granulated onion
- 1 tbsp soy sauce or tamari
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp dried sage
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1 ½ cups water
Instructions
For the mashed potatoes
- Peel the potatoes, cut them into chunks and put them in a large pot with cold water.
- Bring the water to boil and cook the potatoes for about 20 min.
- Drain the potatoes. Then add the coconut milk and mash until you achieve the desired consistency. Season with salt, pepper and nutmeg.
For the Gravy
- While the potatoes are cooking you can prepare the gravy.
- Put the chickpea flour and the nutritional yeast into a small pot. On medium heat, toast the two ingredients for a 1-2 minutes until fragrant (make sure not to burn them).
- Add the spices and sage plus the water. Stir until no clumps are left. Bring to a boil and whisk until it has thickened. Take off the heat.
Notes
* Instead of chickpea flour you can also use wheat or spelt flour. I haven't tried using other types of gluten-free flour.
